If you are going to fish for carp (or any other catch and release fish) then you should also learn the skills neccessary for treating them correctly on the bank and use these skills in conjunction with top quality carp care materials whish are now widely available.

Damaged fish are commonplace now on many fisheries and this is entirely down to angling pressure, inappropriate care of the fish, and sue of inadequate or inferior quality materials.

At our French lakes Les Croix and Les Levades we provide high quality equipment alongside a set of guidelines aimed at helping our fishing clients to care for the carp they catch.

The majority of fisheries have a “barbless hooks only” rule. The most damage caused by a hook is when it is removed, and a barbed hook will always cause more damage. When a barbed hook passes through a carp’s mouth and gets caught in the landing net mesh, the damage caused can be terrible when the fish struggles in the net. When you get a barbed hook stuck in your finger, you have to go to hospital to have it removed. These are some of the reasons why barbless hooks are specified at many fisheries.

Think about your hookilnk material. Braided hooklinks are responsible for a lot of the damage that is seen to many carp’s mouths. Some braids are very fine and abrasive, and can actually cut into the mouth of the fish, this happens when the hook is well inside the mouth of the carp, and the braid runs around the corner of the mouth and when under pressure acts like a cheese wire. Coated braids such as Fox coretex, ESP strip-teaze and Nash missing link are safe to use but the coating must not be stripped back from the hook otherwise the effect is the same. Mono and flourocarbon hooklinks are a lot safer.

Shrink tubing over the eye of the hook, which is primarily used to aid in the “flip and turn” process of modern rigs, also has a secondary useful purpose in that it reduces the damage caused by the eye of the hook rubbing inside the mouth of the carp.

Every angler should own and use landing nets, unhooking mats and weigh slings of the highest quality, these items cost a fraction of the total cost of a carp set-up, so there is really no excuse for using inferior quality products. At our French fisheries Les Croix and Les Levades, we provide this equipment free of charge to all anglers and we ask them to use them in the following mannner, which is the correct and most fish friendly procedure.

1. Leave the carp in the water in the landing net whilst the unhooking mat etc is prepared. Our weigh slings fit perfectly inside the unhooking mats, if they are laid out like this ready, this is the best way to start.

2. Wet the sling and mat using the water bucket provided. Zero your scales with the sling wet. Take the fish in the net to the mat and unhook it, then apply medi-carp or similar to the hook wound.

3. Move the carp out of the net and into the weigh sling, at the same time removing the net from the mat. Photograph the fish now. With todays digital cameras, keeping the fish on the bank for extended photography sessions is unneccessary and unacceptable.

4. Zip up the weigh sling, weigh the fish and then return it to the water in the sling, open the exit zip and leave the fish in the water in the sling until it is ready to swim off of its own free will.

The above procedure should take no longer than 3 or 4 minutes. Please look after all the carp you catch in this way so that those fishing after you can also benefit from catching the fish in pristine condition…

Flats fishing is very exciting experience for anglers of all ages, whether just starting or talented angler. Flats are long, shallow water areas next to deeper water.

Flats fishing with grass or other aquatic vegetation offer food and cover for a variety of fish as well as shrimp. The mainly required after fish when flats fishing include sea trout, redfish, tarpon fish, bonefish, permit and snook. Another popular catches are Barracuda, bluefish, striped bass, mutton snapper, and cobia.

When you choosing the excellent areas for flats fishing, look for flats that are 8 feet deep or less. Flats that are more productive usually contain stumps, brush piles, grass beds or other types of cover. Flats that contain shallow ditches or humps are especially attractive to bass. Also, look for baitfish, crabs and other “fish foods”.

Watch tides carefully when locating good flats to fish. Some will be very dry during low tide. As the tide rises, game fish will move in to feed whereas when the tide drops game fish will wait for crabs and baitfish to run away the flat.

Flats are usually fished with fly gear or light spinning gear. Light tackle is the rule.

If you are using a rotating outfit, load it with no stronger than 12 pound test. Live bait such as pigfish, mullet, shrimp, and pinfish works well.

If you are flats fishing during July through August, natural colored lures work best.

Another equipment to include on your fishing trip is sunscreen, a raincoat, sunglasses, suitable footwear, and plenty of water to drink.

The most important equipments needed are usually a small skiff with no more than 2 fishermen on board. This lets the guide pole across shallow waters with ease, to reach the best flats.

Also, keep in mind to wear light colored clothes to reflect the sun’s heat, and be less visible to the fish.

Aside from the overuse of cleaning solutions and the application of silicone protectant on inflatable boats, there is nothing else a boat owner can do to cause the boat’s seams to leak. Almost all leaks on seams are caused by hitches in the manufacture and unless your boat is still under warranty you need to take your leaky inflatable to an appropriate repair shop.

Wicking is the tendency of air in the inflatable to escape from the inflation chambers by following the thread from one end to the other. This dilemma is common to more expensive boats because the heavy fabrics are not completely soaked or coated with PVC or Hypalon or neoprene. Wicking is not really a problem but it can prove to be quite an annoyance and can become worse over time that you will need to have it repaired.

Leaking fabrics become inevitable in old boats even if there is no large abrasion. A large abrasion usually can cause wicking too. To repair wicking and leaking fabrics, you can paint the exterior or seal the interior or do both.

Inflatable Paints

It is not easy to detect wicking and leaking fabrics as it will remain undetected using the soap bubble solution method. Some wicking or leaking fabric might be evident if the boat needs to be pumped several times a day and still look limp at the end of day. You can fix and protect your boat by applying a couple of coats of inflatable paint.

Yes, there are paints solely for repairing inflatable boats. Studies made by the US Army found that such paint can effectively stop leaks made by pinholes as large as 0.045 inch. However before you coat your boat, make sure that you patch up any visible holes and punctures. There are several credible brands that manufacture paints for inflatables. Some are made especially for Hypalon or PVC only while there are some brands that can be applied to both materials.

They come in different colors of gray, white, black, red, blue, yellow and orange. You can also ask the seller to custom-mix for you. Water-based, this paint that can be used for both PVC and Hypalon that is also applicable to neoprene, vinyl and even for wooden floorboards as it is non-skid.

Application is easy as you can coat the boat directly without using any primer. However you need to clean and dry the boat first away from direct sunlight. If your boat is PVC wash it entirely with MEK until it is no longer glossy. If your boat is Hypalon, wash it with acetone first. Use masking tape to tape-off all areas that you don’t want to be painted.

Dilute the first coat with water then apply the first coat using a good brush. Make sure that you paint all the nooks and crannies that need to be painted. Check for drips and runs before drying the first coat. Apply the second coat full strength. Paint it on thick making sure it is even then let it dry for at least four hours. Note that if you change the color of your boat from dark to light you need 3 to 4 coats.

Inflatable Sealant

You need to patch from the inside if patching the exterior does not stop leaks. Internal sealant kits are in order for severe wicking, abrasion or excessive wear and tear of the floor-to-tube seam. Check the boat for leaks using the soap-bubble procedure. Mark the spot. Drain water from the tubes then inflate it to its usual pressure. Make sure you have the right valve as you insert the sealant’s injection nozzle through it. Squeeze about an ounce of sealant into the tube then immediately remove the nozzle as you pump air into the tube. Turn the boat oriented to the marked spot and let gravity move the sealant to the leak. When the sealant starts to bubble through the leak, deflate leaving the tube barely with air. Let it dry for 3 to 4 hours. Treat each leak independently. Do not substitute tubeless-tire sealant .

Flavours are such an issue with carp anglers and the fruity ones especially I thought it well worth a look into to show you a few tips that can help you improve your catch results. Whether you use readymade baits or make your own this unique article on bait flavours, impacts and components is highly stimulating and reveals a number of great insights and flavour and bait secrets you can exploit to catch loads more fish!

Fruit flavours naturally form as part of the ripening process as fruits mature. The whole point of most fruits is to be as attractive as possible to the creatures that will consume them and thus spread the seeds that are contained as they are excreted out of the creatures. Fruits are most attractive when fully rips and tend to give us signals not to eat them when not ripened fully. For instance eating lots of unripe apples will not do your digestive system any favours!

Have you ever noticed how tart and strongly acidic apples are when unripe? Acids are a very significant part of the reasons why fruits are very successful in carp baits. For example, malic acid from apples is used to enhance the sensory impacts of very many flavours and is well-known edge in bait terms with those guys more knowledgeable about flavours. Acids and sugars are not all there are to fruit flavours. Fruits are basically dual health, energy and nutritional providers, for the creatures that eat them and fruits also can provide extremely rich environments for seeds to germinate in when broken down.

Fruits contain sugars and these are instant energy to fish. Fish tend to really home in on instant energy sources that enter their blood stream very quickly. For eons, fish have fed upon season fruits dropping into water. But fish adapt to new flavours and flavour components all the time whenever their sensory systems encounter them. In very similar ways humans adapt and cross-adapt senses to be able to more easily identify and exploit and monopolise fresh new sources of foods.

Flavours are very definitely a notable sign post of good food. Ethyl butyrate is one of the cheapest and most commonly used flavour components. It is used in citrus and pineapple type flavours as well as in plum, peach, apricot, mango and guava among many others. However in the case of foods and the human food industry today, just because a food has a good flavour, this does not equate to a good taste and highly significantly it may not actually mean that a food is good for you (or fish!) It may just mean that flavours cover up a host of negative effects and impacts that foods can have.

Many anglers get worried about using synthetic flavours but have virtually no idea how extremely diverse such flavours and components are, no idea what reactions can occur in water and at carp sensory sites of contact and what internal impacts many components and solvents can have on fish beneficially! Did you know that glycerine has a similar food energy value in terms of energy as white table sugar and is a sweetener in its own right?

Glycerine-based flavours are very effective in part because glycerol is completely water-soluble. It is used to extract herb extracts and used in making herbal tinctures and in successfully removing tannins in these and so on. It is used in preference with herbs because compared to ethanol alcohol it has no secondary denaturing or inert rendering effects on herbal extract constituents.

Glycerol has many advantages over alcohol as a bacteriostatic and having bactericidal action so it is ideal for use with natural fruit flavours for instance. Such mixtures can help preserve baits for long periods, especially if further acids or low pH substances are added. Glycerol will sweeten flavours as well as add some food energy value. Glycerol is also better than ethanol alcohol in regard to its much higher boiling point of 290 degrees Celsius so you actually do not lose it compared to alcohol when heating up baits in cooking them; after all you want those flavours still inside your baits when you use them and not lost into the air right!

Many anglers mistakenly believe that flavours cover up bitter tastes that carp find attractive but in fact very many flavours are exceptionally bitter yet are highly successful in high levels! Sweetened flavours tend to enrich the impacts of flavours on fish senses so for instance there will be a higher likelihood of repetitive feeding responses as a result of Talin used in combination with fructose concentrate or sucrose rich substances such as honey. I regard betaine as a sweetener and enhancer in this respect also.

Not many anglers think of being that creative in creating their own fishing bait edges but all it takes is a deeper knowledge of substances and it is very easy! For example, simply mix black strap molasses and or Minamino plus some enzyme-treated liver with 1000:1 strength flavour to create something entirely new and unique!

Flavours and in particular sweet and fruity and sweet spicy flavours are very much used to entice people to eat more food than is healthy for them. If you took the flavours and cocoa out of chocolate and just saw how much sugar and nasty transfats are in chocolates I very much doubt people would regard them as sane to eat! Did you know that coco is lethal to dogs? The very same natural substance hailed as a miraculous (theobromine) can have negative consequences if consumed in too high quantities – just like anything!

One point I could make here is that that some of the more successful flavours may not just be a label or smell as it were, but actually contain certain substances with very significant bioactive internal impacts on fish. But you can make your own highly successful metabolic rate stimulating flavours too with the right knowledge!

I doubt doctors would approve of chocolate containing so much sugar! It certainly has a contributory role in causing diabetes in western people. But guess what, one of the most used flavours is used in chocolate, namely vanilla. This flavour has evolved from the natural to various synthetically-produced and extracted combinations.

There was a time when you could not buy any readymade carp baits at all and so making homemade baits was the only option. At this time I was one of thousands of anglers in the seventies and early eighties and onwards who made their own baits and used all kinds of flavours as the major attractors in cheap carbohydrate and more nutritionally stimulating carp baits.

Fruit esters are some of the most recognisable components in carp bait flavours because they are very volatile in air which means we get to smell them very easily despite our very poor sense of smell and taste compared to carp. When you walk into fishing shops you will often encounter the pungent aromas of carp fishing baits, of fruit notes and solvents in the air of many forms. One point I will say about solvents and esters is that many of these and other highly successful bait substances are very easily mixed with water; they are either totally miscible, extremely hygroscopic or at least have the minimum of water solubility so they mix with water.

When it comes to flavours, the degree to which flavour components are able to mix with water is so vital to success in many ways. Some flavour components can mix with water immediately and in doing so suck water into your baits quickly so enabling less soluble substances to leach out more efficiently. Some flavour components have low water solubility and may tend to form an oily layer on the water surface, but this does not stop them being attractive to carp, and fruit oils are very well-known carp attractors.

When fruits ripen they ferment. This produces alcohols and as most of us know, alcohols are very volatile and easy to detect. They mix with water very easily too and work well in lower water temperatures especially when water is denser. The more highly soluble a flavour or solvent is, the more easily it can be dispersed in the water column and be detected by fish tracking the concentration gradient of the flavour or solvent in solution back to your bait.

If you have not done this before, try a few tests for yourself. Get 3 brands of the same flavour, for instance pineapple and butyric acid or cranberry or banana or Scopex for example and just soak your hook baits for 24 hours in neat flavour. Them fish these against each other on an easy lake and see which flavour out-performs the others. On this point I think it is hilarious how many anglers actually sit there moaning about their readymade baits not producing fish when they are just not prepared to think for themselves and experiment.

Readymade baits are not the ultimate pinnacle of all you can count on because Mr Carp has plenty of other ideas about this and can respond in all kinds of ways so you either do not get bites as the fish are too wary of all too familiar baits or simply do not even recognise your bait as food for whatever reason, or simply ignore your baits because there is nothing in them that will overcome their natural caution although the fish may be all too well aware they are in the water!

If you fancy doing something a little different this year as we go into the autumn and colder months why not help yourself with this little trick: Combine your favourite glycerol-based flavour with your favourite alcohol based flavour with butyric acid. Simply mix them up at a rate of a third each in your mixture. Try making up 9 millilitres of this flavour mixture and to this add a millilitre of Talin, a millilitre of intense sweetener and a millilitre of liquid betaine.

You might think that this sounds over the top but you will be surprised! Try this at the level of 3 millilitres to 5 millilitres per pound of boilie base mix or double it or even treble it for both hook baits and free baits when soaking your readymade baits or in making your homemade baits. Do this in small batches and test your new baits against ones you have been using and see the results! Much depends on the pH of the water you are fishing so try a few different flavour levels OK!

One aspect of flavours that is fascinating is that you can often hit into different other species when using different flavour levels. Also one flavour termed pineapple for instance will be better at a higher or lower level in your water compared to another brand. The comparative components and effects of different brands are vitally important to consider! This is a very big point and just one reason why testing different flavour levels in slightly different baits on 3 rods can seriously open your eyes!

So do your own testing and do not just go for the first brand or popular flavours that you come across; test them OK! For example I use a butter cream flavour that I have personally adapted and added to with further esters and acids etc; and it has proven to be just as effective as any leading brand of Scopex!

Flavour recipes are closely guarded secrets of course but there is nothing stopping you breaking the rules of convention and going your own way in your own testing and formulating o flavours! I am certainly not against using perhaps just 2 millilitres of a particular flavour when making a homemade bait or bait dip or soak or maybe even 30! Always remember that not all flavours are on the same base, may not even have a base, and many will certainly not be anywhere near 1000:1 concentration so you can use loads more!

I would have no hesitation in using this in very high levels in very soluble open texture ground baits. I personally might add all kinds of other things, from essential oils like clove oil or terpenes, eugenol, chilli extracts or other spice oleoresins, banana oil, pineapple oil, liquid emulsifier etc, citric and, ascorbic acid and many lesser well known solvents and highly bioactive substances too.

I have just made a totally natural flavour based on liquidised elderberries, fresh fennel seeds, pineapple which is just over-ripe, plums, black berries, raspberries and high potency liquid emulsifier, essential oils, fruit and spice and herbal oils, seed extracts and some other substances. Everything I have put into this flavour has a strong purpose for being there and I would put this kind of homemade flavour against anything synthetic and most of this flavour was free because I went out and picked the ripe fruits myself.

Just on the point of over-dosing, you might worry about solvents but what about acids? Maybe try using 1 millilitre of butyric acid (instead of just a few drops,) in your autumn winter baits this year and see what happens!

Just a note of caution, use gloves when handling any acids as they are extremely reactive you know; which is rather the point. I recommend you really think about the significance of this to achieve loads of competitive edges over other baits and fish caution too OK! Revealed in my unique readymade bait and homemade bait carp and catfish bait secrets ebooks is far more powerful information look up my unique website (Baitbigfish) and see my biography below for details of my ebooks deals right now!

There are some excellent and some very poor carp fisheries in France, I have fished a fair few of them, and we regularly hear reports from customers at our lake, comments that are
not always complimentary, relating to venues previously visited in France.

Unfortunately it is a fact that there are plenty of unscrupulous lake owners in France with little or no knowledge of fisheries management – please be careful !

It is important to find the right venue for you, carp anglers do not all want the same thing, so don’t just follw the crowds, look for what you really want in your holiday.

Some of the factors that might be important to you are ;

pricesize of the carpsize of the lake degree of difficulty of fishingdistance from the ferry port/ travel time to venueavailability of airport collectioncan the venue be booked exclusively ?Is there accommodation at the lake and how far from the water is it ?do the owners live on site ?location/climateavailability of food at the venue

The first advice that I would give to prospective customers is to look very carefully at the website of the venue in question. Are there photos of carp which match up to the claimed stock – if you don’t see plenty of photos of fish of a similar size then be very wary. This also applies to the size of the lake (most lakes are smaller than they are claimed to be) I have spoken to a lot of people who have turned up at a venue to find that the lake is half its advertised size…

How difficult is the lake to fish and does this correspond to your level of skill and experience ? Often this is tied to the size of the lake and what you are used to fishing in the UK, if you are used to fishing small waters then it might be best to look at a similar sized lake in France.

This is not to say that all small waters are easy, in fact some of the smaller waters in France can be very difficult indeed, so check out the catch reports on the website.

The location of the venue and the distance from the ferry port at which you will be arriving will obviously determine the length of your journey in France, and will also have an impact on the weather that can be expected. If your chosen venue is in Northern France and you are looking to book a holiday in April or October for example, don’t expect to be spending the week in shorts and t-shirt !

On the other hand, if you are taking your partner with you, the likelihood is that she will be looking for a holiday in the summertime and will be hoping for plenty of sunshine, so the venues located in the southern half of the country will offer the best chance of good weather.

The journey time to some of these southern venues can be extensive, from Calais down to the Limousin area can take 8 to 10 hours driving with a copuple of stops on the way, some of the venues in the Dordogne are 10-12 hours drive. Fortunately, some of these venues offer a package that includes collection from the nearest airport and hire of a full carp fishing set-up for the week. Although driving in France is very relaxing compared to the UK, If you are not fond of driving then a venue that has this option may well be worth considering.

Do you want to share the lake and facilities with other anglers ? If not then you will need to choose from one of the many venues offering exclusive bookings. Choosing this type of venue means that you will have exclusive use of the lake and the on-site facilities. The main advantage of this is that there will not be other anglers fishing the water, this rules out the possibility of having your holiday spoiled by others.

Does the venue offer accommodation ? Lakeside accommodation takes a carp fishing holiday to another level, and if you are taking your partner or the whole family with you, they won’t want to spend the week in bivvies ! There are only a few venues that offer high quality accommodation, and these venues are justifiably popular, so you will need to book well in advance, possibly up to 2 years in advance in some cases ! Remember to check how far from the lake the accommodation is – the closer the better !

Are the venue owners English and do they live on site ? This can provide extra security and reassurance for guests should you have any problems or emergencies whilst you are there.

Finally – does the venue offer a food package ? Whether you are taking your partner or not, this option can be very attractive, meaning that you will be catered for, with breakfast, lunch and evening meal provided – the ultimate option for spoiling yourself !

Two carp fishing holiday venues Les Croix and Les Levades offers many of the above options – please take a look at the websites !

Aside from the fish that is so intimidating due to its size, you will also get to know the place with the spectacular views as well as the sceneries of the place. Your kids will also love the presence of the wildlife that comes to be plentiful in Alaska. Even though you are not fond of fishing, you can still enjoy the vacation. Amenities that are offered can surely satisfied the guests, if you want to be entertained then turn on the cable TV, if you want to keep in touch with your friends you can avail the free internet connection, you can also enjoy at night with the bar that comes so splendid with other guests of the lodge. You can also free to cook your catch around the kitchen or let their chef prepare it for you.

If you are left with the conclusion that speaks about expense, then it is time for you to search for the best fishing package that offer a family vacation in a very reasonable price. There are thing covered by this package, there times that it is for the place alone, or fishing equipments , and some offer package with fishing guide. You can really choose from the best. So what are you waiting for? Plan out for the next activity now, just make sure that your schedule will coincide.

When people think about a fishing vacation in Southwest Montana, their thoughts usually gravitate to fly fishing the Beaverhead River. The Beaverhead is one of the more prolific and challenging blue ribbon trout rivers that people come from all over the world to fly fish. This tailwater flows out of Clark Canyon Reservoir and is a small river in size but an enormous river in stature. With thousands of trout per mile and rarely more than 70 feet from bank to bank, the Beaverhead River is literally stacked with trout. Big Trout. The Beaverhead is known for its population of very large Browns and Rainbows, attracting fly fishers from all over. The Beaverhead’s constant cold-water provided by the reservoir’s outflow, coupled with the generally silt-free nature of the water and stable summertime flows create an ideal habitat for aquatic insects. This phenomenal insect habitat produces millions of bugs, which translates to prolific hatches throughout the summer. With so much food in the river, the trout can’t help but get big.

When fly fishing the Beaverhead, you encounter a meandering river that creates countless holes and buckets, which provide ideal holding-water for trout. There are trout lyingaround every corner, and there is no shortage of corners on this winding river. A fly fishing angler should haveno difficulty in finding trout on the Beaverhead–the challenge comes in hooking and landing these strong and energetic trout. First, you must pick the right fly to imitate the hatch. With so many natural insects in the water column, it is essential that you pick a pattern that closely matches what the tout are keyed in on. Second, you need to have great presentation with your fly. Whether you are nymphing or throwing dries, a good drift dramatically improves your chances of hooking one of these fish. Finally, once you have hooked a trout, fighting them in the fast water and tight quarters is no easy task. A fish landed on the Beaverhead is a well earned fish.

The upper Beaverhead River, from the Dam to High Bridge, is generally fished with small nymphs. This isn’t to say that at times there isn’t amazing dry fly fishing, it is that most of the fish caught in this section are on nymphs. From High Bridge to Barretts, nymphing is still the most successful style of fly fishing, but more opportunities exist for catching Beaverhead trout on larger dries such as hoppers and crane flies. Bellow the Barretts’ diversion the number of trout per mile decreases, but that doesn’t mean that opportunities for trophy trout arediminished. Throwing hoppers in the later part of the summer between Dillon, Anderson Lane and Beaverhead Rock frequently produce trout well in excess of 20 inches. Streamer fishing is another style of fly fishing that can produce large fish on the Beaverhead River. Casting streamers under the willow-choked banks in the early hours just after dawn is very successful way to get a trophy Beaverhead Trout to eat.

The Beaverhead River is an impressive fishery with world-class fishing opportunities throughout the entire river. So whether it’s fishing size 22 trico spinners in The Slick, nymphing the Axel Hole with PMDs or throwing hoppers on the lower river, the Beaverhead River has something to offer nearly every fly fishing angler.
